“Mr. Padre” is pretty much universally loved and accepted as the greatest player in Padres history. His career spanned 20 years (1982-2001) and he collected 3,141 hits, all in a Padres uniform. As of this writing, Tony Gwynn is ranked tied for 22nd all-time in career batting average. Notably, Gwynn’s career ended >40 years after everyone ahead of him on the list.

Gwynn tragically passed in 2014, so he did not have the same chance to sign as many cards (in terms of being in sports card releases) after his career ended.

That said, Gwynn’s cards have a strong market. Let’s have a look at my ten favorite from his playing career:

    #10 – 2000 SP Authentic – SP Chirography

Tony had a beautiful, readable signature. When you see his signature on a card, you don’t need to strain to hard to make out his name.

That signature is on display in this well-composed horizontal card. It dedicates enough signable space to keep the autograph readable and the remaining space incorporates two action images.

The print run is unknown for this card. There is also a “gold” parallel which is hand-numbered to his jersey number, 19.

The back loses points for repeating the images from the front and having no player information, opting instead for an authenticity statement.

Here are some recent sales, courtesy of 130point.com:

#9 – 1996 Leaf Signature Series – Extended Series Autographs

No one pulling a Tony Gwynn autographed card is going to be upset to find him pictured in a hitting position – that’s what he was known for. Some may not know, however, that Gwynn won five Gold Gloves in his career. I’m not sure how deserved those were, but if you look at some of his advanced fielding stats it looks like Gwynn was a good RF from 1990-92.

This card was part of Leaf’s Extended Series in 1996, which acted like an “update” set for rookies, players who changed teams that year, as well as veterans who probably didn’t get their autographs returned in time to make the initial set release.

This card was a print run of 1,000 and is also available in a “Century Marks” parallel with a print run of 100. Notice the foil print at the top of the card:

These cards have plenty of space for the autograph and interesting backs with a picture and a summary of the player’s 1996 season.

    #8 – 1986 TCMA Limited Autographs

I can’t say I really know anything about this set. I do know that TCMA was a small trading card company that made small, licensed sets of minor league and current and former major league players, from the late-60’s to late-80’s. Learn more here.

This set claims to be only three cards – Gwynn, Bret Saberhagen, and Gary Carter. This autograph doesn’t appear to be authenticated in any way, so be careful when buying this card – non-autographed “promo” cards do exist, so these could be easily faked.

Still, if you can find a real copy, you’ll be treated to a well-composed photo from a time where very few MLB players had autographs as part of sports card releases.

Shop 1986 TCMA Limited Autographs on eBay

#7 – 2000 Pacific Aurora – Pennant Fever Tony Gwynn Autographs

What I love about this autographed card is how random it is. The “print run” on these autographs is believed to be 147 and Tony is the only ball player to sign for Pacific Aurora in 2000. I believe Tony was a sponsor for Pacific in 2000, but still! The entire set had 150 autographed cards, all from Tony Gwynn.

Needless to say, it’s a chase card for Gwynn collectors. This card is very busy and I’m not sure its surface was designed to handle ink very well, so these cards may have some condition issues.

Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell for >$1,000 whenever they come up for sale.

#6 – 1999 Upper Deck Century Legends – Epic Signatures

This is an attractive horizontal card that harkens back to old-timey baseball with its background image of an expansive outfield in grayscale.

There’s a lot of room for Gwynn to sign and the autograph is on-card.

The print run for this base set autograph is unknown, but there is a “Century” parallel that is hand-numbered to 100 copies:

These cards are selling fairly frequently and for >$250:

#5 – 2001 Fleer Premium – Decades of Excellence Autograph

2001 was the first of two years for the set “Fleer Premium”. This card is quite busy, but I believe it works quite well.

The design carves out some space for the autograph and Gwynn, as he usually did, utilized the space beautifully. This makes the autograph still pop despite whatever the heck is going on in the background.

You can see that this card is hand serial-numbered to 82, so it is quite rare.

If you want this card, good news: you can probably get it for under $1,000. A Gem Mint 10 just sold for $1,037 at auction. Now the bad news: you need to find a copy.

    #4 – 1998 SP Authentic – Chirography

Remember when I said I like action shots? Well, I like this portrait, too. Everything seems to work well together in this card design.e

The only detraction? The horribly boring card back, containing just an authenticity statement.

The print run is unknown for this card and there is no parallel versions of it available.

Being the most available of the cards on this list, there are quite a few recent sales. If you’re patient, you may be able to get this card for ~$150:

    #3 – 2000 Upper Deck Pros & Prospects – Game-Worn Jerseys Signed

Here’s the first relic autograph to make the list. This card definitely gets bonus points for having a “game-worn” delineation on the jersey swatch.

I’ll have to research when the first “jersey relic” card was created, but 2000 seems pretty early in terms of these types of cards.

The on-card auto has plenty of place to shine on this card, despite a relatively busy front. Still, pulling this card would have you shaking, no matter what team you root for.

Shop 2000 Upper Deck Pros & Prospects – Game-Worn Jerseys Signed

#2 – 2001 SP Game Bat Edition – Piece of the Game Signature

I love the wood grain look of this card, with a white strip running through it to help accentuate the bat relic and part of the signature. Despite being half on a brown background, the autograph still pops off the card.

The back is a little weird with Gwynn (and everyone else in the set) peering through an oddly-shaped submarine viewport.

Having a piece of a Tony Gwynn bat is super cool and combining it with a well-composed on-card autograph is amazing.

Turns out owners of this card agree, as I’m not able to find any recent sales of it.

#1 – 1992 Ultra – Tony Gwynn Commemorative Series Autographs

There’s a lot to like with this card. 1992 Fleer Ultra was (I believe) the first major set to release autographed cards in their packs. These cards were pretty rare; it is believed that Tony Gwynn’s set of 10 cards has a combined 2,000 signed copies.

If you assume the copies were equally distributed over the 10 cards, this card of Gwynn crashing into the wall while (presumably) making a catch has 200 copies.

The autograph is on-card and Fleer took the step of embossing an authenticity stamp over it.

The only thing Padres fans might not like about this card is the huge Dodgers logo Gwynn’s about to crash into.

This card just sold in January 2025 for $150 and I think that’s a steal:

TOP TEN Andruw Jones Autographed Cards on the Braves

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links to eBay. I may be compensated if you make a purchase through one of these links.

Andruw Jones was one of the most hyped prospects in baseball history. He burst into the national consciousness by hitting home runs in his first two World Series at-bats in game one of the 1996 series vs. the Yankees. He was the youngest player to homer in the World Series at 19.5 years old.

Jones was one of the best defensive centerfielders in history, winning ten Gold Gloves. He hit 26 or more home runs in ten straight years, including a league-leading 51 in 2005. He compiled 434 home runs, 1,289 RBI, and 1,204 runs in his 17-year big league career.

As of this writing in early 2025, Andruw Jones is still not a member of the Hall of Fame, despite having more career WAR than near-unanimous 2025 class member Ichiro Suzuki.

I believe that Andruw Jones will be a member of the 2026 HOF class, so it might be wise to buy his cards now if you collect hall-of-famers or looking to flip for a profit when he is voted in. Jones received 61.6% of the vote in 2024 and percentages this high eventually get in.

Jones signed a lot in the early days of his career, so let’s have a look at some of my favorite Andruw Jones autographed baseball cards:

    #10 – 1997 Bowman – Certified Autographs (Black Ink)

1997 was widely considered Andruw Jones’ rookie card year and the composition of this card is quite attractive. His white uniform makes it easier for the auto to “pop” off the card.

Bowman autos were a tough pull in 1997, with the “blue ink” versions averaging 1 every 96 retail/hobby packs.

There were two more rare parallels – “black ink”, averaging 1 every 503 packs and “gold ink”, averaging 1 every 1,509 packs.

I have seen a number of 1997 Bowman autos smudge and/or fade, so getting a pristine card could be challenging.

A blue ink copy sold in March of 2025 for $30 plus $4 shipping:

Shop the 1997 Bowman Certified Autographs on eBay

    #9 – 2000 Fleer Showcase – Fresh Ink

The 2000 Fleer Showcase – Fresh Ink card is not serial numbered and the print run is unknown. Given that there is usually a card or two available on eBay at any given time, I’d say the print run was substantial (1000+?).

This card has a great signable space and Andruw took full advantage of it. The back of the card is a terrible authenticity statement.

A copy of this card sold for ~$10 back in December 2024:

    #8 2001 SP Authentic – Chirography

Upper Deck released some very nice, clean-looking on-card autographs in the early 2000’s under the name “Chirography”. The card shown above is the Gold parallel of the base auto, which are hand-numbered to 25.

The print run on the base autos is unknown, but these cards do have a pretty strong market, so they may be relatively rare.

This card gets bonus points for a large signable area, an on-card auto, and a unique image on the back.

In terms of recent sales, a Gold sold for over $200 in February 2025 and a base for $35 in December of 2024:

    #7 – 1997 Fleer Circa Redemption

Confusingly, this Circa card was available by redeeming 10 redemption cards that were found in 1997 base Fleer packs.

This card is hand serial-numbered to 200, so I imagine it was short-printed compared to other signers that year.

This card’s positives are an on-card auto, its exclusivity, and that it can reasonably pass as a rookie card.

Its main drawback is that it’s super busy and the auto can get a little bit lost in the commotion. Andruw generally tries to keep his autograph pretty visible, though.

Shop 1997 Fleer Circa Autograph Redemption on eBay

    #6 – 2003 Donruss Recollection Collection (2001 Donruss)

I generally like to put cards that are at least reasonably attainable in these lists, but this 1 of 1 card is so darn pretty I had to include it.

Andruw signed it perfectly given the composition of the photo and the ink looks durable (an issue with some of the Recollection Collection autos).

The negatives? If you want this card you’re going to need to scour the face of the Earth looking for its owner.

#5 – 1996 Leaf Signature Series – Extended Series Autographs

Leaf released an “update” to their tour de force Signature Series set in January of 1997. This set included some top rookies like Andruw Jones (fresh off his World Series moments) and Jason Giambi.

This card could definitely be considered Jones’ rookie card. The print run is said to be 2,000 for Jones and the cards were available via redemption.

There are copies of this card signed in blue ink, rather than the customary blank ink desired by Leaf, but I’m not sure how rare they are.

There is also a rare “Century Marks” parallel with a published print run of 100. Have a look:

These cards offer a nice signable area and look very clean. The back has a unique image and a synopsis of his 1996 season.

#4 – 2001 SP Game Bat Edition – Piece of the Game Signature

This card has a lot to like. An on-card auto, bat relic, an a clear, readable auto.

The back is a bit boring, but that was par for the course for Upper Deck around this time.

These bat relic cards that Upper Deck put out around this time are also not very thick, in case you hate thick cards like me.

In terms of recent sales, one changed hands in December 2024 for $32:

    #3 – 2001 Fleer Showcase – Sweet Sigs Wall

Given all the spectacular plays Andruw Jones made patrolling center field, I think there’s something extra special about this wall relic autographed card.

While the player image is small, the real star of this card is the wall relic and the “on-wall” auto.

There is also a “bat relic” auto card for Andruw Jones in this set that uses the same image and card design.

The print runs are unknown for this card and I couldn’t find any recent sales data.

    #2 – 1998 Score – Andruw Jones All-Score Team Gold Autograph

This card was a sweepstakes prize in 1998. There is believed to be 500 copies.

The card design is the same as Score’s “All Score Team” insert set, but this card has a gold finish rather than a silver one.

It features a well-framed action photo where Andruw’s face is mostly visible. You will see that the front features the text “Authentic Signature” down the side.

I think the dark ink looks good on the gold background, though you wonder if the autos hold up well considering the finish probably wasn’t designed to be inked.

These cards have changed hands recently, at vastly different prices:

    #1 – 2000 SP Authentic – Buybacks Autographs (99 SP)

My top Andruw Jones autographed baseball card is an SP Authentic buyback. It was found in 2000 packs and the card was originally released in 1999.

I think the gold/sepia background looks gorgeous on this well-framed photo. Andruw’s compact signature works well on this card.

Serial-numbered by hand to 531, this card is much more attainable than many SP buybacks of that era. There are several available on eBay at the time of this writing.

There you have it – the ten “best” Andruw Jones autographed baseball cards from his time with the Atlanta Braves. Andruw is a player whose historical significance is growing some with age (mostly due to a better understanding of defensive value) and I feel is a good bet to make the HOF in 2026. It might make sense to buy his cards sooner rather than later.

  • TOP TEN Jason Giambi Autographed Cards on the Athletics

TOP TEN Jason Giambi Autographed Cards on the Athletics

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links to eBay. I may be compensated if you make a purchase through one of these links.

As a A’s fan who grew up rooting for the late-80’s and early-90’s Bash Brothers teams, it was difficult to make sense of and come to terms with the 1993-1997 teams. They were bad. Jason Giambi helped pull the team out of the cellar and back to the playoffs, so he’ll always have a soft spot in my heart.

I’ve even forgiven December 2001 appearance on the Letterman Show (Have you ever been to Oakland?).

So without further adieu, I give you my Top Ten best Jason Giambi autographed baseball cards in an Athletics uniform. These are all from his playing days, as I hate post-playing day cards with a passion.

#10 – 1998 Donruss Signature – Signature Series Autographs (Millennium Marks)

This autographed card came in three parallels:

    • Red (print run 3,100)
    • Green – Millennium Marks (print run 1,000)
    • Blue – Century Marks (print run 100)

The Millennium Marks edition gets points from me for being attainable (1,000 copies) and a color match with the Athletics’ unis.

This card has an on-card auto, as sticker autos really didn’t start to become prevalent until the early-2000’s.

On the back, this card is serial-numbered and it has a different image than the front of the card.

#9 – 2001 Topps Finest – Finest Moment Autograph Refractor

The 2001 Topps Finest – Finest Moments Refractor Autographs do not have a known print run, but they were much more rare than the “base” Autographs that season (Base were 1:22 hobby packs while the Moments Refractor Autos were 1:250).

The image here shows more of the (steroid) girth Jason gained as his career progressed. The on-card auto has a nice signing area and there is a unique image and 2000 season description on the back of the card.

You could even say that the greenish hue of this card makes it a color match (all Finest Moment Refractor Autos used this green color in 2001).

Shop 2001 Topps Finest – Finest Moment Refractor Autographs on eBay

    #8 – 2001 Upper Deck SP Authentic – Chirography

This card gets points for a super-clean layout and a large signable area.

The back has a unique image, but also has the signature boring authentication text that Upper Deck was known for.

This card doesn’t have a known print run, but there have been a number of recent sales (as of Feb. 2025) which likely indicates a decent amount of copies:

    #7 – 1996 Leaf Signature Series –Bronze

The 1996 Leaf Signature Series is one of, if not the most, icon sets for autographs. This set had three parallels (print runs below are unique to Giambi):

    • Bronze (print run 3,500)
    • Silver (print run 1,000)
    • Gold (print run 500)

This card features a good action shot of Giambi hustling. Out of the copies I’ve seen, Giambi seemed to frequently sign above and below the metallic-looking seal.

This card could be viewed as a rookie card, as rookie cards were not quite cut-and-dry in the mid-90’s. Giambi was a big prospect, so he had a number of USA and minor league cards. 1996 seemed to be the first year he consistently showed up in major league sets.

This card is quite available and changes hands (as of Feb. 2025) for $5-11:

    #6 – 2000 Skybox  – Autographics

I’ve always been a big fan of Skybox Autographics cards, which could be found in a number of Fleer products in 2000. This card is notable for the embossed “Skybox Authenticity Stamp” that was placed over the signatures.

This card has a well-composed picture, a decent-sized signable area, and, of course, an on-card auto. The back is about as bad as it gets, though.

There is a rare “Purple Foil” parallel to this auto that is hand-numbered to 50 copies:

    #5 – 2005 Donruss Recollections Collection (2001 Donruss)

Donruss had a long-running “Recollections” series where it would buy back older cards, get them signed, and then insert them into packs of the current year’s product. They tended to have pretty thin print runs.

This 2001 Donruss autographed card (inserted into 2005 packs) is serial-numbered to only 25 copies. It features Giambi in a throwback uniform.

While the signable area isn’t great, this card gets points for rarity and having an interesting back with a full set of stats.

    #4 – 2001 Upper Deck Evolution (e-Card Game-Used Jersey/Bat Autograph Exchange)

This card has it all – bat relic, jersey relic, and an on-card autograph. It’s also horizontal, which some people hate and I just merely don’t prefer.

Still, it has a nice signable space and the back at least has a portrait to liven up the boring authenticity statement.

#3 – 1996 Leaf Signature Series – Extended Series Autographs

Here’s another auto card from 1996, potentially viewable as a rookie card. The “Extended Series” was released in January of 1997, so the card references his full-year 1996 stats.

It had a large 5,000 print run, though it is also available in a “Century Marks” parallel (PR100) if you want to chase that.

It’s got a big signable area, a unique image on the back.

A copy recently sold for $10 on eBay:

    #2 – 2000 SP Authentic – Buybacks Autographs (1997 SP)

Donruss wasn’t the only card company buying back cards from previous sets, autographing them, and releasing them in new sets. SP Authentic from Upper Deck had some great chase cards from this era.

This card is from the 1997 set and was released in 2001. It is hand-numbered to 34 and features an on-card autograph. The back has an authenticity stamp to go along with the standard 1997 SP back.

    #1 – 2001 Upper Deck – Sign Game-Used Balls Gold

If you can’t deduce it, I’m a sucker for game-used balls. Though I do wonder if they make sure the player actually touched the ball that they used for the card. Being a first baseman, Giambi had a better than average chance of touching the ball used for this card.

This card is serial-numbered by hand and to only 25, making it a difficult chase.

The auto doesn’t appear to be very visible on the red background, but it doesn’t completely disappear.

The back is par-for-the-course boring for Upper Deck.
